new Python version and its documentation

Thanks to Davide we are running the new shining source code versioning system (Git) on Github and managed to have the Sphinx generated documentation platform that builds up very nicely.

The wind of change

Eventually our project is moving full steam ahead. There are couple of great developers joined us that immediately changed the picture.

Python version is now on the right path, thanks to Davide. See our new stuff on Github: http://github.com/gasagna/OpenPiv and also documentation started on http://openpiv.sf.net/python

The C++ version is now also in very good hands. Tim joined us on Sourceforge effort to make C++ readable, extensible and modular. See yourself on http://sf.net/projects/openpiv -> Develop

Everybody is welcome to join the development of C++ and Python. The Matlab version is pretty stable but will not attract much of our attention due to the non-open and non-free policy of Mathworks Inc. Unfortunately, there is no point anymore to support it by developing open source and free tools for all.

It was easier than anything else using the Macports http://www.macports.org/.

Install Qt4 by >> sudo port install qt4-mac
Install fftw by >> sudo port install fftw-3
Download the latest source from the Sourceforge.net: see http://www.openpiv.net for the link
Unzip and run: >> qmake -o Makefile urapiv.pro (urapiv is our old brand name). qmake is by Qt4
run >> make to compile the whole thing together into urapiv.app (the executable for Mac OS X)

New Matlab release – super fast on Windows XP 32-bit machines

We’re glad to solve one of the most annoying features (‘bugs’) of our Matlab version of the OpenPIV software package – the speed. It was very slow. Using >> profile on, urapiv_gui, profile report we identified the most problematic point – the redraw of the QUIVER. The change was then small, quick but very significant. The 1000 x 1000 pixels image is processed within few seconds using standard 32 x 32 interrogation window and simple signal-to-noise algorithm test (peak to mean ratio).

The snapshot of the new version looks like the previous ones, but there are few bugs fixed:
a. RGB TIFF images are readable now, using Matlab’s rgb2gray function
b. tiffread2.m file is included for the other TIFF file formats. Thanks to the authors (read inside the license information)

Update from SVN (see the wiki for the instructions) openpiv.wiki.sourceforge.net
Basically it’s a merged /trunk and /branches/Dec2007 versions

New features:

rectangular interrogation windows and different spacing in horizontal/vertical directions
Stop button works
faster interpolation of missing values – replaced by the great inpaint_nans of John D’Errico (see Matlab central for more details, BSF licensed)
